Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila
Description:
The Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila situated on the right bank of the River Yamuna on the Grand Trunk Road (National Highway-1), opposite Timarpur beyond Khyber Pass lies Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila.
The Gurudwara was named after a Muslim hermit who lived here during the reign of Sultan Sikander Shah Lodhi. He was called 'Majnu' because of his love for the Almighty. When Guru Nanak visited Delhi he blessed the hermit and showed him the path of salvation and stayed in his hermitage. Thereafter, his hermitage located on the hillock (tila) near the banks of Yamuna, came to be known as Majnu Ka Tila. Later, Guru Har Gobind, the sixth guru, also visited the hermitage, when Emperor Jahangir invited him.
According to the tale, a Muslim hermit used to live on this hillock, during the reign of Sikander Lodhi. The devout love of Majnu towards God and his radiant spirit finally led to the construction of this shrine, to commemorate him and Guru Nanak. On Baisakhi, a 'langar' is arranged here every year, to celebrate the birth of Khalsa.
One day Guru Nanak Dev Ji, travelling across the Yamuna, came upon Majnu and blessed him. By getting the spiritual knowledge which he was seeking from such a long time, he becames a sincere disciple of Guru Ji. Guru Ji was so delighted with his loyality that He told Majnu that "your name will be immortalized". So in the memory of this Muslim Saint, this place was named Gurdwara Majnu-Ka-Tilla (the hillock of Majnu).
